Please talk to the secretariats of the chairs before you register in Friedolin. They will tell you which transitional regulations apply and whether your course registration (and later the separate exam registration) should be done in Friedolin or by paper slip. Please also have the lecturer explain the structure and contents of the module to you before or at the latest when the course begins.

There are only study and examination regulations and a module catalog (sections on the three fields of study geology, geophysics and mineralogy) for the study program.

The degree program was approved at the end of 2011 and published on January 2, 2012. On the web pages it is sometimes referred to as "2011" (e.g., here), sometimes as "2012" (e.g., there); but they are identical. Its - still valid - study and examination regulations can be found below.

The course offering was revised and put into effect in 2016; formally, this was done by rewriting §7 of the study regulations (module catalog) [pdf, 50 kb] de. Teaching has also been carried out according to this module catalog since 2016. The new module catalog is advantageous for you students because the elective offer has been expanded at the expense of the compulsory offer; the new module catalog offers more flexibility.

Through the Master's thesis, the candidate should prove that he or she is able to independently work on a problem from his or her subject using scientific methods within a given period of time. The Master's thesis marks the completion of the program.  (§11 para. 1 of the examination regulations)

Authorization

The Master's thesis can be registered in the second year of the Master's program in Geosciences at the earliest. It must be started no later than 6 weeks after 90 LP have been achieved.

Request for admission

The application for admission to the Master's thesis (Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy) can be downloaded from the website of the Faculty of Chemical and Geosciences under Applications and Forms de. Please fill out the application and bring it to the examination office at least two weeks before the start of the master thesis. There it will be checked if all requirements for the admission to the master thesis are fulfilled. Please write your name and the names of the first and second supervisor legibly!

Assessment

The Master's thesis is independently evaluated by two reviewers.

Levy

The Master's thesis must be submitted to the Examinations Office of the Faculty of Chemical and Geosciences in four hard-bound copies (no ring binding) after 6 months of processing.

Possible extension of the processing time

According to §11 paragraph 4 of theexamination regulations [pdf, 83 kb] de, the examination board can extend the deadline for submitting the Master's thesis by a maximum of one month in exceptional cases upon justified request. For students of the younger semesters the new examination regulations (2021) apply.

The informal application has to be submitted in writing by the candidate to the examination board of the MSc Geosciences. The consent of the supervisors must be obtained in advance and documented on the application. The reason for the extension must not be the candidate's own fault. Informal requests should be made at least two weeks before the submission deadline specified in the admission to the thesis. After reviewing the application, the candidate and the examination office will be informed about the decision.
