Novel insights into the mechanisms for Sb mobilization in groundwater in a mining area: A colloid field study

Metals and metalloids, including antimony, are transported by aqueous media in the environment. The exact mode of transportation, however, is not well known, can change in space, time, and physico-chemical conditions of the medium. In our newest work, we investigated antimony in polluted water at the world's largest antimony deposit in Xikuangshan in China. We found that antimony can be to a large extent associated with organic colloids, such as protein-like or humus-like substances. The fraction of colloidally-carried antimony depended on oxygen concentration, being lower when more oxygen was available. This study offers interesting insights in the environmental mobility of antimony, even though they are limited only to the fairly extreme conditions found at this mine.
